DAY SAILER FLEET 15 RACING
The OYC has always included active adult and junior sailing programs. During the early years of the Club, the adults sailed Town Class boats and the juniors sailed Beetle Cats, Widgeons, and Turnabouts. Now the current adult OYC racing class is the O'Day 17 foot DaySailer (click here for junior sailing information).
At this time, the OYC's racing group, designated as Day Sailer Fleet 15, is only involved in intra-club racing and is a member of DaySailer Association. The program consists of Sunday races from June through August. There are three series and each series consists of six races. Skippers competing in at least 51% of the races are eligible to sail in the Club Championship race held at the end of the season.
Every year Fleet 15 also sails their traditional "Old Lady's" race. The winner of this race earns the somewhat dubious privilege of hanging the portrait of the "Old Lady" in a prominent place in their home for the period of one year. The winning skipper also hosts the next annual "Old Lady" party which is a potluck supper. The party is also when awards are distributed and is open to all those who have participated in the racing program.
Club members, who may not have their own boats or are qualified racers as yet, may also actively participate in the racing program by serving on the Race Committee as race assistants on the judging and support boats. Tasks performed by the Race Committee volunteers include setting the race course, signaling the start and finish of the races, and manning the chase/safety boats. The safety boats set and remove the racing buoys and shadow the fleet to aid sailors as required.
If you wish any further information about Fleet 15 or Club racing, please contact Alan Keener, Race Committee Chair, or
Roy Crocker, Fleet 15 Captain.
