Junior Sailing Program Racing

Junior racing is open to participants in the Junior Sailing Program taking the intermediate, skippers, advanced, or racing classes. The juniors race two types of boats.

Optimist

The Optimist, often called an Opti, is a very popular boat among young sailors. The Opti was a designed to be used to instruct kids and raced by kids. An Opti is single handed. It is about 7 foot 6 inches in length and has a single sprit sail, making it small and easy to handle by young sailors. Opti's are raced throughout the US and internationally by skippers mostly of ages 6 to 15.

Club 420

The Club 420 or International 420 is an international sailing class boat raced by many college teams and in the Olympics. A helmsman and crew race this fast and exciting 14 foot racing dinghy. These boats have a mainsail, a jib, a small spinaker, and trapeze wires and harnesses. Position of crew weight is very important. The Club 420 require considerable skill and coordination between helmsman and crew to sail well.

Photos taken during the 2006 season include many photos of Club 420 racing.
