JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM
The Club has been offereing a very popular Junior Sailing Program (JSP) since 1968 for children 8-17 using its three fleets of sailboats: (12) 14.2 foot Catalina Capri centerboard sailboats (which are being replaced 2011-2013 with (12) 15.0’ Precision 15 sailboats), (12) 14 foot Club 420 Class racing sailboats and (16) 7.5 foot Optimist (Opti) dinghies.
The Program is available to all levels of sailing experience from beginner to competitive racer; students may attend for two weeks up to the full eight weeks. The program highly recommends a minimum of two consecutive weeks to maximize time on the water and understand the concepts of sailing. Many Club members enroll their children or grandchildren in the Junior Sailing Program; however, the program is open to all children regardless of whether their parents or grandparents are Club members. Questions? Send email to office@orleansyachtclub.org.
Sailing is an involved sport and the OYC strongly recommends a minimum of two consecutive weeks of enrollment to maximize time on the water and put to use the variety of new skills.
OYC JSP's MISSION STATEMENT
The Orleans Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program seeks to instill in its students a joy of sailing and an understanding of the Corinthian Spirit, which upholds the values of integrity, honesty and service to the boating community. Those students who complete all levels of the program will understand the fundamentals of sailing theory and will demonstrate a proficiency in handling a small sailboat in various conditions, including racing. They will also become aware of the safety issues surrounding the use of boats on the water.
INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF
We are pleased to welcome back Joan Clowes for
another year as Director of the OYC Junior Sailing Program. Joan’s commitment to the program is evident by her enthusiasm for teaching and for sailing as a lifetime experience. She is assisted by a core group of veteran staff plus some energetic new instructors. All our instructors, including Joan, learned to sail through the OYC’s sailing program and many continued on to participate in their high school and collegiate sailing teams. They all love sailing and their passion to teach this life-long sport is reflected in their dedication to impart the knowledge and enjoyment of sailing in a carefully supervised, fun-filled environment. All senior level instructors are U.S. Sailing Level certified as well as Red Cross First Aid & CPR certified.

Students should also bring what they would normally take to the beach (i.e. a towel, hat, long-sleeve shirt, windbreaker, sun-glasses, water and/or nonrefrigerated snacks) PLUS a change of clothing.

JSP CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Beginner: This class is for students with little or no sailing experience. Students will be taught the basics of sailing (wind direction, points of sail, knot tying, rigging and boat handling) using two classes of sailboats.
Intermediate: In this class, sailors build on what they have previously learned and continue to grow more comfortable on the water. A brief introduction to racing is taught.
Skipper: Sailors further hone their skills learning advanced concepts and drills. They are encouraged to participate in Opti Regattas on Thursdays and in other regattas outside of the Club. An introduction to the Club 420s may be taught when appropriate.
Advanced: Sailing and racing skills learned in the Opti’s and Capri’s are applied to the Club 420s - a slightly larger, faster racing dinghy. Racing rules are covered in more depth, advanced boat handling skills are taught, and the use of a spinnaker and trapeze are introduced.
420 Racing Team: This is the highest level of junior sailing at OYC. These sailors demonstrate a keen knowledge of racing strategy and rules as well as superior boat handling skills. The team competes weekly against other Clubs in the SMSA Team Racing bracket as well as participating in regattas all over the SMSA region.
ROBERT RADTKE MEMORIAL FUND & SCHOLARSHIPS
The Robert Radtke Memorial Fund was established in December of 1989 in memory of Robert Radtke who was a very active sailing member of the Orleans Yacht Club. The purpose of this fund is to provide grants to children in need of financial assistance to allow them to participate in the Orleans Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program. Up to 32 weeks of scholarships are awarded each year to eligible Nauset school system students. Radtke Funds may also be used to defray expenses for students participating in regional, national or international championship sailing series. Applications for these scholarships are distributed to all schools within the system each year in the Spring.
The Robert Radtke Memorial Fund is a tax-exempt fund managed by the Cape Cod Foundation, 259 Willow Street, Yarmouthport, MA 02675. As a 501(3)c entity, the Fund may accept all donations, bequests, or memorial contributions. Contact the Club’s office to make a donation or for further information.
